적당함
Jeokdangham
회사소개서적당함은 스튜디오 언더바의 중심 철학이자 미학이다. 너무의 반대축에 있고, 충분함과 조금 다른 곳에 있다 너무 빼거나, 너무 더하지 않는다. 충분함보다 조금 힘을 뺀 채 허술하다. 적당히 빼고, 적당히 더하고, 적당히 채운다. 그 사이 여유는 사람이 채웠으면 한다. 처음 보는데, 왠지 익숙한 디자인을 한다. 색채가 짙지만, 호불호가 없는 공간을 만든다. 일본의 와비사비(わびさび;오래되고 낡은 것을 아름답게 아끼는 마음)라는 단어는 영어로도 wabisabi로 적는다. 한국의 적당함이라는 단어도 충분함을 뜻하는 enough가 아닌 그저 jeokdangham으로 적혔으면 한다. 그런 마음으로 적당한 공간을 만들고 운영하고 있다.
Jeokdangham is the central philosophy and aesthetic of Studio Underbar. It sits opposite too much, and a little apart from enough. We take away no more than needed, and add no more than needed. It is looser than sufficiency, left a little undone on purpose. The room in between is for people to fill. We make designs that feel familiar the first time you see them, with strong colour but nothing to dislike. The Japanese wabi-sabi is written in English simply as wabisabi. We hope jeokdangham is written the same way: not as enough, but as jeokdangham. With that in mind, we make and run spaces that are just measured enough.
PLANNING
브랜드의 핵심을 디자인에 담는 기획을 가장 중요하게 본다. 기획이나 BM이 빈약하다면 디자인 전에 기획부터 한다. 이름을 짓고 로고를 만들고 비즈니스 모델을 함께 설계한다. 필요하다면 상권과 부동산도 함께 고른다. 기획이 없는 디자인은 오래가지 못한다고 믿기 때문이다.
We treat planning — putting the core of a brand into the design — as the most important work. If the plan or the business model is thin, we begin with planning before design. We name the brand, build the logo, and design the business model together. When it helps, we choose the location and the property with the client. We believe design without a plan does not last.
SPACE
필요하면 무엇이든 디자인하지만, 가장 잘하는 것은 공간 디자인과 시공이다. 기능성과 심미성을 동시에 잡는다. 시간이 지날수록 깊어지고 아름다워지는 디자인을 지향한다. 뚜렷한 개성이 있지만, 스타일을 고정하지는 않는다.
We design whatever is needed, but what we do best is space design and construction. We hold function and beauty at once. We aim for design that deepens and grows more beautiful with time. We have a distinct character, but we do not fix ourselves to a single style.
GRAPHIC
원래 그래픽 디자인 회사에서 출발했고, 그래서 그래픽을 잘한다. 로고부터 사이니지, 메뉴판부터 이름표까지 디테일 하나하나를 디자인한다. 공간과 브랜딩을 잇는 일이 그래픽이라고 생각한다. 공간과 그래픽을 함께 다루기에 통합적인 디자인이 가능하다.
We started as a graphic design studio, and that is why we are good at graphics. From logos to signage, from menus to name tags, we design every detail. We think graphics are what connect space and branding. Because we handle space and graphics together, integrated design is possible.
